Obituary for Lee Wilcox

Lee Wilcox
Longtime Irving resident Leora Jean “Lee” Wilcox was born on August 22nd, 1923 in the tiny four corners town of Napoli, NY. She was the youngest daughter of Leo and Winifred Van Tassel. On April 11, 1942, she married James Henry Wilcox, who survives her after 73 years of marriage. “Granny,” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was a tireless, energetic woman who did everything she undertook to the “nth” degree. When the Wilcox family arrived in Irving from Jackson Mississippi, she first worked as the circulation manager for the Irving Daily News and then took on duties for Irving State Bank (later Irving Bank and Trust), where she drove to every new resident’s home every day to greet them. With her background in public relations and sales, she “knew everybody in town,” so when she opened her own antique store in downtown Irving, its huge success came as no surprise. She and Jim loved to decorate and work in the yard together and made a 20-year project out of renovating and landscaping the old “Lucas” house on Jefferson Street. For the past several years, the couple has resided in the MacArthur Hills Assisted Living facility. Granny is survived by two sons, Jack and Clarke. She raised Jack by herself until he was 14 months old, while Jim was serving in the Army Armored Division during WWII. The two boys gave her daughters-in-law Linda, Suzi, Linda Kay and Charlene (deceased), 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren who each brought her enormous pride and joy. She once climbed on the roof of the Lucas house, ringing a cowbell and shouting to the world that her grandson Chuck had finally made the honor roll! At large family gatherings, she couldn’t always remember who belonged to who, but it was never important…they ALL belonged to her! Granny had a huge collection of Santa Clauses that she collected and always made Christmas an extravaganza. A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, August 8, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Irving; interment at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens immediately following. Those who attend are encouraged to dress in cool, casual clothes. Family and friends are invited for visitation at Brown’s Memorial Funeral home on Sunday, August 7, 2016 between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. In her final years, Granny suffered from advanced dementia, so in lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America online at https://www.alzfdn.org
