Obituary for Dixie K. Dykes (Hendrix)

Dixie K.  Dykes (Hendrix)
Dixie Kathleen Dykes, age 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, November 6, 2016. She was born on March 4, 1919 in Lake Creek, Texas to Archibald Halvin and Camilla Lee (Phillips) Hendrix. Dixie grew up in east Texas (Cooper) and later in west Texas (Paducah). She attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville in the late 1930’s. In 1940, she married John Preston King, who was a casualty of World War II in 1943. Later while working in Mexico City for the U.S. government, she met G.M. “Chuck” Dykes, and they were married in 1948. They returned to the U.S. in the early 50’s and Dixie resided in Irving from that time until her death, a longtime Irvingite of more than 60 years. Dixie is preceded in death by husbands John Preston King and G.M. “Chuck” Dykes, sisters Trixie Butler and Dawn Hendrix, and nephew Cary Butler. Left to cherish her memory is daughter Diantha King Bowling and husband John Knox Jr. of Litchfield, CT; son Don Malcolm Dykes of Bedford, TX; daughter Robbie Dykes Farina and husband Gary of Grapevine, TX; granddaughter Tanisha Bowling Carrell and husband Reverend Len T. of Leawood, KS; grandson Matthew R. Douglas of Austin, TX; granddaughter Michele Kathleen Douglas of Dana Point, CA; granddaughter Kendall W. Dykes and great granddaughter Caitlin Carrell. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Irving, with internment at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens immediately following the service. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 9, 2016 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to FUMC/Irving at http://www.fumcirving.org/give-online.
