James Kenneth Paterson

Paterson, James Kenneth, passed away peacefully in the quiet of his Euless home on Friday, November 11, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Oklahoma City on March 27, 1935 to Margaret and Peter J. Paterson, Jim spent his early youthful years living in Oklahoma City and Kansas City until his family settled in Irving, TX in 1947. He graduated from Irving High School and went on to college at Texas Tech University (then known as Texas Technological College) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. While attending Texas Tech, Jim pledged the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was initiated as a member of that national social organization on February 8, 1956. Thus began a long and enduring relationship of brotherhood predicated on the principles of the four pillars of Kappa Sigma, fellowship, leadership, scholarship and service, that extended throughout Jim’s life from his college days until, in the company of angels, he departed this life this past Friday and ascended into the loving grace of our Father in Heaven.

In early 1959, having just graduated from college, Jim began his business career with Wadley Blood Research in Dallas. Subsequently, in 1965, he joined Lanpar Pharmaceutical Company, a privately-owned firm in Dallas, which began a sixteen-year relationship where he eventually became that firm’s chief executive officer and principal shareholder, until his retirement in 2001. Thereafter, Jim joined Dallas-based Lambert Surgical, Inc., where he served as a manufacturer’s representative selling specialized surgical medical devices to hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers throughout the Southwest.

Jim married his college sweetheart, Phyllis Cozby Paterson, in 1962. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Phyllis, in 1983, and his subsequent long-time companion, Nancy Teat, in 2014.

During Jim’s retirement years, he took great pleasure in organizing and hosting numerous annual reunions with his Kappa Sigma brothers which were held at his beautiful ranch nestled in the foothills of the majestic mountain range near Westcliffe, Colorado. These outings enabled Jim to extend the brotherhood that began at Texas Tech in the mid-1950s and continued throughout Jim’s life for almost 60 years. Being able to spend time in this beautiful mountain setting with family, friends and his Kappa Sigma brothers brought many joyous occasions to Jim. As a result, many of Jim’s Kappa Sigma brothers often could be overheard to remark that Jim was the social glue that kept them together and in frequent contact for more than 60 years. Jim’s love of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity knew no bounds, and his enthusiasm was so contagious that it frequently influenced other brothers of the order to feel likewise. In 2006, to honor Jim for his loyal and untiring interest in the fraternity and its principles, his Texas Tech brothers arranged for and funded his membership #1384 in Kappa Sigma’s prestigious Jackson’s Men Program which has since grown over the years to presently include 4268 members.

Possessed with many admirable traits, Jim was a gentleman, frugal yet always generous in a kind and thoughtful way, frequently choosing to do for others in an anonymous, effective manner. While his many friends will surely miss his physical presence daily, Jim’s unbounded, infectious spirit will live on among us, always.
