Obituary for Douglas Ray Chandler

Douglas Ray  Chandler
Douglas Ray Chandler of Irving passed peacefully into the hands of his Lord and Savior on November 13, 2016 in the presence of friends and family. He was born February 2, 1924 to Ray and Ruby Chandler in Greenville, Texas and graduated high school in Camden, Arkansas. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in the 850th bombardier group where he flew 50 missions as a mechanic, tail gunner and flight engineer. After the service, he went to college at Oklahoma State University where he studied agriculture. He married the love of his life, Marilyn June Mason in June 1947. He joined American Airlines in 1948 as a mechanic in Tulsa then promoted to flight engineer and worked in Chicago, then transferred to DFW and moved to Irving in 1952. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a Christian man who has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Irving for over 60 years. He was passionate about horses and card playing. He was respected among his airline peers, Mom’s sorority friends, Saddle club members and all those who knew him. He was extremely dependable and always followed through with his commitments to family, friends and career. He served in many leadership roles in organizations, such as the Golden Triangle Saddle Club, Golden Wings and American Association of Sherriff’s Posse and Riding Clubs. In 2013, he was honored to participate in the D/FW Honor Flight to Washington DC to tour the WWII memorials. His wife, Marilyn, preceded him in death in 2010. He is survived by his sons, Gary Chandler and Beverly, Glenn and wife Dorothy, and Galen and wife Robin; grandchildren Stacy Ihnken and husband Jason, Jeff and wife Tiffany, Cody and wife Lindsay, Lynn Bates, NeeLey Shelton and husband Jim, Christopher Jordan and wife Jennifer, and Samatha Higden; great grandchildren Kason, Emery, Peyton, Brennen, Blaine, Riley, Gunner, Kaylen, Myra, Savannah, Addie, Kolton, Timothy, Isabelle, Madilyn, and Ruth Viola-Sams, his second love. Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Saturday November 19, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Irving. The family interment will precede the service at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. The family will receive friends 6-8pm Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 211 W. 3rd, Irving, Texas 75060 or The Honor Flight, 420 E.
