Obituary for David James Montague

David James Montague

David James Montague entered eternal life December 18, 2016 at the age of 84.
David was born in LaCoste, Texas on May 31, 1932. He served in the Navy aboard the destroyer USS Massey. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1953. Years later he would remember the rough seas where he lay spread-eagle in his bunk to avoid being thrown out.
David was an engineer in the metal building industry for 38 years. He retired from Mesco Building Solutions in December, 1999 as vice-president of engineering and stayed active part-time as an engineering consultant.
He enjoyed the hobbies of fishing and golf. He walked many miles a day for his health. He was careful about diet and did extensive research about diet for heart health.
Being an avid UT Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys fan, he enjoyed being able to attend games and taking his grandchildren to Texas Rangers games. He lived for family gatherings and would have done anything for family or friends. In later life, David developed a love of animals by helping his wife, Joyce Virlee, foster rescued kittens. Maggi, his cat, often slept in his lap or near his head.
David is predeceased by his parents, James and Julia Montague, his sister Doris, and his son Jeff Montague.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce Virlee; his sister Martha Moet (Topper); his brother Gary Montague (Lisa); his two sons Keith Montague (Lois) and James Lee Sharp; his three daughters Noelle Ebner, Stephanie Goodwin (Chris), and Sandi Howard (Arnold); nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Dave was a generous, wonderful father and husband. He was very supportive of family and friends. “Dad was the mathematical constant in our family,” said daughter Stephanie Goodwin. “He was our port in the storm.” “Dad always led by example,” said daughter Sandi Howard. “He was loving and kind. He was always there for us. He was a great man.” Very beloved by many, he will be greatly missed.
