Obituary for Jerome 'Jerry' Rogers Loftus

Jerome “Jerry” Rogers Loftus, after 86 years of a life well lived, died May 28, 2017. He was born to the late John “Buddy” Francis Loftus Jr and Jane Rogers Loftus on March 21, 1931 in Princeton, Kentucky. Jerry was a member of Plymouth Park United Methodist Church of Irving. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Loftus; son, Jerry Michael Loftus, who passed in infancy; and brother, John Francis Loftus III of Princeton, Kentucky.
Jerry graduated from Butler High School in Princeton, Kentucky and attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky as an art major and Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. Jerry was proud to have served our country in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 as an airplane mechanic. In 2014, Jerry lost the love of his life, Lee, whom he met in the Air Force as they served together. After 36 years with Delta Airlines, he retired as Senior Work Control Supervisor.
Growing up in Princeton, Kentucky, Jerry was a Boy Scout and received The Order of the Arrow. He loved music, sang with the high school quartet and played clarinet in the school band. Additionally he enjoyed playing the tall bass fiddle and the organ. Despite working for the airlines, Jerry’s favorite type of family trip was a good ole fashion road trip seeing the wonders of the US. He especially loved mountains, taking the family through the Smokey’s and the Rockies, planning multi-week summer trips in the family pop-up Puma trailer to see the southeastern US, and taking Lee to see every red rock to be seen in the National Parks of Utah, Colorado and Nevada. He enjoyed taking cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and TransAtlantic to Europe. And, though not thrilled with long flights, agreed to a trip to Germany, Switzerland and Austria so Lee could see the historic Passion Play in Oberammergau. Jerry loved spending time with his family and telling stories about his life.
Jerry was a licensed amateur radio operator, starting with a CB radio, participating in the local CB radio club and then becoming a ham radio operator.
For the past decade, Jerry was an enthusiastic member of the Irving AMBUCS doing his part to see AMTRYKES presented and gifted to those in need, particularly children. He enjoyed the smiles they shared when riding their AMTRYKE for the first time.
Left behind to cherish Jerry’s memory is daughter Teri Loftus-Emery and husband Rick of Irving; son Michael Loftus and wife Tammy of Grand Prairie; grandson Corey Loftus of Grand Prairie; sister-in-law Margie Loftus of Princeton, Kentucky; nephew John Loftus and wife Catie of Princeton, Kentucky; nephew Brian Ackerman and wife Sarah of St. Augustine, Florida; niece Shannon Ackerman Cuddie of Vero Beach, Florida; great nieces Ollie Jane Loftus and Hailey Collier of Princeton, Kentucky, and Noelle Ackerman of St Augustine, Florida; great nephew Hunter Collier of Princeton, Kentucky; cousins Joe Loftus of Eddyville, Kentucky, Mary Anne Loftus-Smith of Northeast, Maryland, Jim Martin of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Ann Jeryl Martin of Arlington, Virginia, Robert Rogers of Old Hickory, Tennessee, and Judy Gahnt of Crossville, Tennessee.
The family invites everyone to attend the memorial service celebration 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis King officiating. The family requests memorials to Irving AMBUCS at American Business Clubs, Irving Chapter, P.O. Box 153425, Irving, TX, 75015-3425.
