Obituary for Walter Leslie Craighton

Walter Leslie  Craighton
Walter Leslie Craighton was born in St. Cloud, MN on August 3, 1924, to John and Vera Craighton. Walter died in McKinney, TX on Sunday July 2, 2017 one month shy of his 93rd birthday. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ardis, and their six children. Two sons; Leslie of Euless, TX and Dale of Ellsworth, WI and four daughters, Carol (Henry) Poland of Minneapolis, MN, Diane Thorburn of Euless, TX, Janice Craighton of Arlington, TX and Doris (James) Kopitke of Euless, TX. Walter had six grandchildren Shanda (Doug) Thompson, Salena (Kenny) Newman, Melissa (CJ) Flanagan, Joshua, Jeremiah, and Angie Craighton. Walter was preceded in death by his mother Vera, father John and three sisters and their husbands Lucille (Vern) Walter, Ruth (Kenneth) Peterson, and Leona (Rollie) Hames.
Walter lost his father at 8 years old; his sisters were 10, 2 and 5 months. He finished 8th grade, but since he was the only boy he had to work to help support the family. At seventeen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CC Camp) he earned $30 a month and $25 was sent home to the family. He received his GED and worked in a machine shop in Minneapolis, MN. He married Ardis Evenstad on May 26, 1951. When the company moved to Wisconsin they decided not to move. Walter had odd jobs until 1961 when he started with the US Postal Service where he retired on April 1, 1987.
Walter loved children; he was involved with cub/boy scouts for over 40 years and umpired little league softball and baseball for over 50 years. He also enjoyed writing poems.
Walter loved God and was faithful in his service until the end.
