Obituary for Gavin Erick Murphy

Gavin Erick Murphy, died at the young age of 41, on July 4, 2017. He was born in Hinsdale, Illinois to Leo Anthony Jr. and Victoria Mary Murphy on April 9, 1976. Gavin accomplished more during his short life here on earth than most people dream of doing in a full lifetime. He had a Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics. Gavin attended The University of Dallas, where in 1999 he graduated Phi Beta Kappa B.S., in Bio Chemistry, Magna Cum Laude. He also attended Caltech in Pasadena, California, where he received the Ferguson Award for the best Doctoral dissertation in Biology. From August of 2000 until May of 2002, he was a Fulbright Scholar based in Hamburg, Germany. There he did x-ray crystallography at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory on the tuberculosis organism. In addition to all his previous accomplishments, Gavin did research at the National Institute of Health in Maryland, as well as the National Institute of Aging. His favorite occupation, he previously stated, was at the Indiana University, where he was Director of Cryo-Electron Microscopy Core Facility. Gavin’s greatest educational and professional accomplishment was his discovery of the 3-D structure of the Nano motor that propels the flagella of bacteria. In August of 2006 his discovery was published in Nature. His hobbies included reading, cooking, gardening, fishing, carpentry and surfing. Gavin wanted to inspire people by working hard and appreciating character virtues. He was known and loved for his quiet, diligent, generous and modest attitude, who was always reluctant to take the spotlight. Words of wisdom Gavin offered to others, “Try to do your best, remain humble, and caring.” Gavin had many accomplishments, and excelled in everything he did, but the love and focus he had, gave and felt for his three children was paramount. He was an amazing, loving and caring father, and will be carried on in his children’s hearts forever. Left to cherish his memory are his mother Victoria Murphy; father Leo Murphy; son Ronan Magnus Murphy; daughter Beatrix Ann Murphy; son Finian Lucien Murphy; Linda Coughlin; sister Tara Tassin and husband Jeremy; grandmother Jean Martineck along with numerous extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m, Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Church of the Incarnation at the University of Dallas, 1845 East Northgate Drive, Irving, Texas.
