Obituary for Corene Cox (Nelson)

Della Corene Cox, at 103 has lived through events that are now history; two World Wars, a depression, a President killed, a man on the moon and many more. She was born May 10, 1915, into the security of a farm tucked into tiny corners of East, Texas. At 7, she proudly walked to school to learn to read and write as everyone did at that time. At home she helped wash clothes in big outdoor tubs, wringing clothes out by hand. At 15, she married her 19-year-old sweetheart, Elmer N. Cox, and they settled on a farm to raise their family. They had four boys and two girls between April 1932 and February 1944. Corene went back to high school with the older boys. In years of great happiness, she had heartaches as well, losing two daughters. Once their house burned to the ground from a fire in the middle of the night. They moved back to Irving, Texas in 1955 and she started to work at Collins radio making circuit breakers that were used in communication systems (she retired from Collins Radio after 21 years on the job.) Corene drove to Richardson, Texas to work every day. She always cooked a big dinner, kept a huge vegetable garden and lots of flowers, but still always had time to baby sit with all her grandchildren. Corene and Elmer had fun building a new house in Irving. She and Elmer loved antiques and spent a lot of time going to sales and collecting almost everything, especially clocks. Corene really enjoyed herself on a trip to Europe with girls from her work. They made stops in Ireland, London, France, Italy and Austria. She loved to travel and had lots of fun on trips to Oregon, California, Idaho, Las Vegas, Nev., Branson and the state of Washington. Corene loved people, music, antiques and her cats. When asked what she wanted for a holiday, she would say, “Just get the family together” and they almost always granted her wishes. Elmers employment was interrupted by heart surgeries, the second one taking his life December 29, 1993 at the age of 82. Della worked hard and always cooked real home-grown vegetables. She made the best fried chicken, pinto beans, pan fried potatoes and pear preserves that you have every eaten. When her family was home she said she made banana pudding in a big dish pan. (She was always willing to help anyone she felt needed help. She was still wishing she could help people till her last days on this earth.) Corene is preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmer N. Cox; daughter Janice Cox and Linda E. Day; sons Kenneth W. Cox Sr. and Jimmy D. Cox. Left to cherish her memory are sons Wayburn (Clyde) Cox of Sulfur Springs, Texas and Aubrey (Cooky) Cox and wife Linda of Prosper, Texas; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and fourteen great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday October 6, 2018 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 North MacArthur Blvd., Irving, Texas 75061. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 11:00 AM also on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the funeral home.
