Obituary for Louis Rex Faulkner

Print
Louis Rex Faulkner, also known as Rex, Daddy, Uncle Rex, Fuzzy and perhaps his most special name – Daddy Rex – was born to Bill and Rosa Faulkner on August 8, 1926 in the Piney Woods of Leesburg, Texas. He had 4 brothers – D.H., Otis, Joe and Robert Glen – plus one sister, Juanita. Rex passed from this world to the next early Wednesday morning, August 23, 2017.

Like many of his day, Rex left his home in the country for Dallas and there met his wonderful wife, Dora Elizabeth Boyd. She was his riveting partner at Texlite making airplane parts and once she spied his sweet, sweet smile (and that stylish rose gold Bulova watch), she knew he was the one for her. They “hired a car” to drive them to Rockwall, Texas and on the rainy night of January 20, 1945, they began their almost 63 years of marriage. Rex was then off to the Army and because of a providential bout of the flu, his ship arrived in the Pacific after the armistice was signed and he served in the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan.

Back home to Dora, they bought a house with the GI Bill in Field City, Texas then welcomed their son, Michael Louis Faulkner, into their family in 1947. Seven years later they brought their daughter Donna Kaye Faulkner home to their new house in Irving, Texas.

Rex joined the brand new Irving Fire Department and worked hard to move through the ranks until he was Irving’s first Battalion Training Chief with his first class of rookies in 1979. The camaraderie of working with fine men in “battle” helped shape him into a servant-leader and he became a pretty decent cook, too, from his years serving at every fire station in Irving.

In January 1981, the same month his only granddaughter, Emily Cate Snider, was born, he retired to help Dora take care of her beauty shop, their lake house at Cedar Creek, their home in Irving and lucky for her – Emily.

Through the years he was active in First Christian Church-Irving, as Outreach Chairman, a Deacon and an Elder. In his last few years, going to church was his most looked-forward-to-outing of the week. His last worship service there was August 6th, when his church family sang “Happy Birthday” to him in anticipation of his 91st birthday the following Tuesday.

Rex was a 61-year member of Irving Masonic Lodge #1218 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

His well-loved wife, Dora, passed away in December 2007 and he made a valiant effort to make a life without her, with his good girl chiweenie, Lucia. Rex is survived by: son Mike Faulkner and his husband, Jim Chamblin, of Napa California; daughter Donna Snider and her husband, Jim, of Irving, who was Rex’s primary caregiver since Dora’s passing; granddaughter Emily Finbow and her husband, Matthew, of Fort Worth; sister Juanita McNutt of Pittsburg, Texas; almost daughter, niece Linda Boyd Thomas, and her wife, Janet Coplin of Dallas, plus two sisters-in-law, and many much-loved nieces, nephews and friends.

Rex was blessed with a very pleasant countenance; everyone always remarked that he had a smile on his face (Dora said that he was always grinning like a possum) and this is just one of the reasons he has counted many as friends throughout his long and honorable life. It is his wish that any memorials be sent to First Christian Church-Irving, 104 West Grauwyler Road, Irving, Texas 75061.

Sunday, August 27, 2017, the viewing for friends and family will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home at 707 N. MacArthur Boulevard, Irving, Texas 75061.
