Obituary for Joan Carroll Sharp

Print
Barbara Joan Carroll was born February 24, 1942 in a farmhouse in Ellis County, Texas to her parents Charles Edwin and Lee Ellen Lambert Carroll. Since World War II had just begun, her family left the farm and went to live in Fort Worth. Her father worked at Consolidated Aircraft building B-24 Liberators to assist in the war effort. At the end of the war, the family moved to Dallas, settling in the Oak Cliff area.

Joan graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1960 and began her business career immediately. After three years, she attended the University of Texas at Arlington and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1968. At this time, Business was an unusual major for women, and she was one of only five women in the School of Business. She later earned her MBA from the University of Dallas in 1984.

Joan met her husband, Rick, in her junior year at UTA, and they married September 2, 1967. They proudly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary alongside their entire family this past September.

Their first child, Amanda Joy Sharp, arrived in 1970. Rick was employed as a pilot for Braniff Airlines and they quickly embraced the airline lifestyle, becoming close friends with other airline families, and especially those who also attended First Baptist Church in Dallas where they were members. They grew deeper in their faith during these years. They took advantage of many classes and seminars about Christian living, marriage, child-raising, and bible knowledge.

Joel Roderick Sharp joined the family in 1977. The family of four enjoyed frequent travel and adventure. The Sharp family has resided in Irving since 1970. Rick and Joan have been members of Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving for 27 years, where Rick is still currently teaching Sunday School.

When Braniff Airlines went into bankruptcy in 1982, their airline friends were a strong support group. After Braniff’s demise, they made the transition to American Airlines allowing the family to continue to reside in Irving.

Joan Sharp peacefully transitioned into her loving Savior’s arms in her home surrounded by family on November 1, 2017.

Survivors include husband Broderick “Rick” Sharp and her children Amanda Sharp Ware, Joel Roderick Sharp and wife Rebecca Cundiff Sharp. “Gram” will be missed dearly by her grandchildren: Abigail and Alex Baum, Hayden Ware, Schaeffer Ware, Ellen Carroll Ware, Marshall Ware, Lillian Ware, Elyse Faith Sharp, Brynlee Grace Sharp, Lily Katherine Sharp and Adelyn Joy Sharp and her great-granddaughter, Oakley Joan Baum. She is also survived by her mother Lee Ellen Cross and her sister Gayle and brother-in-law Charles Holcom as well as Rick’s family: Dana and Jodye Sharp, Frank and Linda Upchurch, David and Bette Lehmann, Harriet Gillispie and James and Ruth Sharp along with 19 wonderful nieces and nephews.

Psalm 34:1-4 Has been her anchor for the last three years and she is now delivered into the Lord’s loving presence.

Psalm 34: I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
