Obituary for Leroy W. Garey

Leroy W. Garey
Leroy Garey, age 93, died peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2018. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to John Wilbur and Mary Elizabeth Garey on June 10, 1925. In 1942, Leroy came to Texas to visit a friend, and at that moment knew that Texas was where he wanted to call home. He became friends with Leslie and Clyde Bowmen soon after moving to Texas, becoming their personal assistant as they traveled, making dr. appointments, and simply caring for their daily living needs. After the Bowman’s purchased some property in Boerne, Texas they built a ranch in which Leroy became the main ranch hand for 20 years. He had a love of horses and while working on the ranch, Leroy acquired and trained a beautiful white horse, in which he named Major. Leroy was the only person Major would allow to ride him, and that he did proudly, many times in the Boerne parades. The final homestead was built on other land acquired later, and Leroy along with Mr. and Mrs. Bowman all lived together as Leroy cared for them and kept the grounds, until their deaths in 1990 and 1993. On February 22, 1992 Leroy married Marjorie and resided happily in Boerne until January 15, 2012 when they both moved to Irving, to be closer to Marjorie’s daughter Julie. Here they happily lived at Brookdale Independent Living for the past 6 and a half years where Leroy was on the culinary committee, played bingo and attended church services. Leroy loved to cook and bake, and took it very seriously, many times having passionately challenged other cooks. After marriage, between 1993 and 2000, Leroy worked at Po Po Family Restaurant in Boerne, retiring at the age of 75. Even after retirement, Leroy enjoyed and continued to cook for family, First United Methodist Boerne events, parties for Sunday School and friends. Leroy had a collection of various horses, cookbooks, beer steins and eagles, and will be remembered as a meticulous housekeeper. Another passion that Leroy carried was his love of dogs, and as he had several large dogs while living in Boerne, his last dog Honey he would claim as his favorite guard dog. He is preceded in death by both parents, 2 brothers and 9 sisters. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Marjorie B. Garey of Irving; step children Mark Simpson of Irving, Paul Simpson of San Antonio and Julie Schilling (John) of Irving; step grandchildren Mitzi Simpson of San Antonio, Taylor Simpson of Colorado Springs, Co. and Claire Schilling of Irving; one step great granddaughter Luisa of San Antonio along with numerous extended loving family and friends. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00pm, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 N. MacArthur Blvd in Irving, TX; a second visitation will be held in Borne on Thursday, June 28, 2018 between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, at Vaughan’s Funeral Home, 319 E San Antonio Ave., Boerne, TX. A graveside service will be 11:00am, on Friday, June 29, 2018 Boerne Cemetery. The family request memorial donations to First United Methodist Church in Boerne or a charity of your choice.
