Obituary for Shirley A. Stehman (Phillips)
Shirley Ann Stehman, of Irving, Texas and Brewster (Cape Cod), Massachusetts, peacefully went home to the Lord on March 12, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Beloved wife of Burnell for 63 years and loving, devoted mother of Sharon of Boston, Massachusetts, she is also survived by her niece, Cynthia and nephew, Roger and his wife Mary. Shirley was born on February 7, 1933 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the late Ruth and Ralph Phillips. Over their 63 years of marriage, Shirley and Burnie lived in Rye, New York, Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts and have resided in Irving since 1991.
Awarded a full, four-year scholarship by the Pennsylvania State Legislature, Shirley attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania majoring in fashion design. Equipped with her education and innate talent, Shirley had a stand-out career designing children’s clothing for Saks Fifth Avenue, B. Altman’s and McCall’s. After the birth of their daughter, Shirley devoted herself to raising Sharon and serving the communities in which they lived. She worked tirelessly donating her time and artistic talents to benefit community organizations including Westchester County (NY) hospitals, the Rye Historical Society, Baylor, Scott White Irving Foundation, Las Colinas Women’s Association and the Irving Symphony League.
Shirley loved spending time on Cape Cod and enjoyed bridge with her friends, cooking, flower arranging and needlework. If you received a Shirley Stehman handmade item, you considered yourself fortunate. Shirley was a loyal and loving friend, known for her charm, quick wit and banter. While small in stature, she was large in life, strong in her faith, always kind and caring, thoughtful and generous, funny and fun.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church in Irving (1615 West Airport Freeway, Irving, TX 75062) on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 11 AM with a reception at Las Colinas Country Club immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Baylor, Scott & White Irving Foundation (www.irvingfoundation.bswhealth.com) or Plymouth Park United Methodist Church (www.ppumc.org).
