Coppell, Texas – Jerry V. Malzahn, 72, of Coppell, TX, passed away, June 12, 2019. He was born September 30, 1946, in Stuttgart, AR to Arthur Gustav and Velma Leona (Rieger) Malzahn. Jerry graduated from Irving High School, class of 1964. After graduation, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Storekeeper Second Class during the Vietnam War. Following the war and his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy, Jerry moved to Texas and enrolled in the University of North Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management. With a love for nature and a passion for leadership, Jerry founded the Malzahn Landscape Company, which he owned and operated for over 40 years. It was during this time that Jerry met and married the love of his life, Lyla (Thompson) Malzahn, and they settled in Coppell, TX. Jerry and Lyla celebrated 37 years of marriage in April. In 1994, at the age of 48, Jerry began to devote himself to landscape painting. His work quickly captured the hearts and minds of people throughout the country. He specialized in Texas and Colorado landscapes; as he had spent decades vacationing in Colorado and fallen in love with its majestic mountain ranges. One of Jerry’s first paintings is of the United States Naval Academy courtyard, Tecumseh Court; the original is hanging in the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, MD. In 2008, Jerry was selected to represent Texas and create a Christmas ornament that was hung on the White House Christmas Tree; his design featured Texas Bluebonnets. Additionally, his work inspired Emmy Award winning composer, Charles Denler, to compose Suite No. 1~ Portrait of the Rocky Mountains~ An American Symphony. Jerry’s love for life, nature and adventure impacted the lives of those around him, made evident by the passion in which his daughter and grandsons embrace each day. He was an active member of his church and Texas community. Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a beloved friend to everyone that knew him. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Gustav Malzahn, Jr. Surviving in addition to his wife, Lyla (Thompson) Malzahn, is his daughter, Franchesca, (Katie); two grandchildren, Asher and Connor Malzahn; mother and father in law, Harold and Joyce Thompson; three brothers in law, Steven Thompson, (Belinda); Tony Thompson, (Debbie); and Hal Thompson; three nieces, April McDaniel, Jayna Nichols and Troy Roper; four nephews, Gus Malzahn, Andy Thompson, Carmack Thompson, and John Steven Thompson; many extended family members. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm just prior to the funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Flower Mound Presbyterian Church, Flower Mound, TX. 1501 Flower Mound Road, Flower Mound, Texas 75028. Interment will be family only at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, with Full Military Honors.
