Obituary for Marjorie Belle Ecklin Simpson Garey (Ecklin)

Marjorie Belle Ecklin Simpson Garey died on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Marjorie was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1925 in Bagley, Iowa to Ethel Clara (Carson) Ecklin and Donald Joseph Ecklin. Marjorie was an only child. She graduated from Bagley High School in 1943 with eleven boys. She has outlived a majority of her classmates. She retained fond memories of her school days, being the only girl until 6th grade. One memory being of Jack Cain fainting in her lap and they put him on the sand table. She also remembers the long, long ride down the fire escape – a real fear at an early age. She was proud to graduate from the same school as her dad. After graduation she moved to Des Moines, IA for nursing school for one year. She had a hard time with chemistry, so she ended up going to work at Firestone Tire for eight years. She met her first husband Kermit A. Simpson in 1949 at First United Methodist Church and married him March 18, 1950. They moved to San Antonio in 1956. Marjorie worked at Ft. Sam Joint Airbase for eight years. In 1963 they adopted their first son, Mark. In 1965 they adopted their second son, Paul. In 1967 their daughter Julie was born. Marjorie was a homemaker after Paul was adopted until 1978 when she returned to the workforce. She worked at North East ISD in the library processing center for ten years, until she retired in 1988. In March of 1984 the family moved to Boerne, Texas. Marjorie and Kermit celebrated thirty-five years of marriage on March 18, 1985. Marjorie lost the love of her life on June 15th, 1985. In 1991, she met her second husband, Leroy Garey and they married February 22, 1992. They moved to Irving, Texas in January of 2012 to be closer to her daughter and family after a stroke in 2011. They lived in an independent living apartment where they were both involved in the culinary club, attended church services, played bingo, were ‘Mary’ and ‘Joseph’ in the Christmas Pageant two years and were ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ at the 2014 Valentine’s Day Party. Marjorie lost her second love, Leroy on June 23, 2018. Marjorie attended FUMC Irving and was a member since 2014. She also kept her membership at FUMC Boerne, Texas since 1984. Marjorie was a loving, caring, Christian mother who put her family first. She was involved in PTA, church programs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and kids sport activities to name a few. She was a gentle soul who always had a smile. Marjorie continued to live at West Fork Village Independent Living until her death. Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, and many friends. Left to cherish her memory are son Mark Simpson of Irving, Paul Simpson of San Antonio; daughter Julie Schilling and husband John of Irving; grandchildren Mitzi Simpson, Taylor Simpson, Claire Schilling; step-grandchildren Crystal McGregor, Bryant McGregor, Lindsay McGregor DeAnda, James McGregor; great granddaughter Luisa; sister in law Avonnel Simpson; as well as many other nieces, nephews, extended family and loving friends.
